My mom taught Michala what, “I’ve got your six” means, years ago. We try to remind Michala constantly to keep her head on a swivel and be aware of everyone and everything around her. Last winter when we were traveling to the cabin, it was late and Terry wanted to get some fuel. The only station that had diesel looked kind of sketchy. The only real lights were directly over the pump and shortly after he began fueling, we all watched a drug deal take place at the pump next to us, and the guy walked off into the darkness. Convinced something was going to happen, I told Michala I didn’t want to take my eyes off Terry and I wanted to watch his six. To Michala, I said, “I need you to watch my back, Michala, so I can watch Dad’s. Let me know if anyone is coming up to the truck.”
What I did not specify was to watch all around me. Literally, all around me. Because I was looking out the back and sides watching Terry, I was not watching out the front or my side and behind me. Michala was watching just my back side; as I was sitting sideways, she was looking out the side of the truck. When I glanced back at her one time, I realized this and said, “Michala! I need you to watch out the front, too!” She said, “But I’ve got your six!” I guess nervous laughter took over, and I said, “You don’t have my six! You’ve barely got my three!”
“You’ve barely got my three” became a funny saying between us after that night. Fortunately, we made it out of there unharmed, but as I jokingly said to Michala, “No thanks to you not having your head on a swivel!”
“The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” - Proverbs 15:3 (NIV)
When Terry and I have faced evil actions by others, I found myself wondering if God was taking a nap during all of this? Had He slipped into a deep, winter sleep, and did not care what was being done to us? But of course that is not the case. God sees everything. Take that night at the dark gas station, for example. God saw everything. He saw the cash exchange and the brown paper bag, and the guy walk off into the dark. He saw Terry standing outside pumping fuel into our truck. He saw things we likely did not see and He saw Michala and me watching from inside the truck.
God has eyes on all of the evil being done to us, too. It may seem like the evil doers are wandering off into the dark and disappearing, but God sees. He sees every single bit of it. He knows what was said about each of us, He knows what was stolen from each of us, He knows what is withheld from each of us. He heard the lies. He saw the evil.
We do not have to worry ourselves about standing before God and “arguing our case.” God already knows. We do, however, have to release it and trust God to handle it. He doesn’t just have our three … He has our six. And then some.
